Although Tim Coy's ancestral home is Savannah, he was born in Baltimore and attended high school in Massachusetts. He received his B.A. from Yale College in 1971. At an early age he developed an enthusiasm for the photographic arts and during his college years spent summers studying black and white photography at the Maryland Institute of Art.

After graduation from Yale, he studied classical guitar at the Guitar Society of New York and the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore.

He subsequently volunteered for the U.S. Navy and served as a commissioned aviation officer. Upon his discharge he moved to Savannah where he opened a popular night club on River Street and embarked on a career in the music business. During those years, he maintained a keen interest in photography and continued to shoot when time permitted.

Since 1998 he has dedicated himself to photography. He has studied under Alison Shaw, George DeWolfe, Tim Cooper, Brad Hinkel, Scott Graber and Jim Hansen at the Rocky Mountain School of Photography in Missoula and under John Paul Caponigro and Thatcher Cook at the Maine Photographic Workshops in Rockport.

In Savannah he has had solo shows at the Oglethorpe Row Gallery, the Jewish Educational Alliance and the Gallery 440 and his work has appeared in group shows at the 3rd Floor Gallery and other venues. In New England his work has been shown at the Granary Gallery, the Field Gallery, the Dragonfly Gallery and the West Chop Club on Martha's Vineyard Island and the St. Mark's School Art Gallery in Southborough, Massachusetts.

Three times the Ossabaw Island Foundation has invited him to serve as an Artist in Residence on Ossabaw Island, one of Georgia's unspoiled barrier islands. Twice the University of Georgia Marine Extension Division has awarded him for his photographic work along the Georgia Coast.

Over the past year his passion for photographing the work of international relief organizations has ripened. His recent trips to Uganda, South Africa and Guatemala have been enlightening spiritually and inspiring artistically. He plans to expand his commitment to the work of international relief organizations.

He lives with his wife Dorothea in Savannah and on Martha's Vineyard.
